Sorry that it has been a couple of weeks since the blog has been updated. We have been hard at work and have so much to share with you!!! I look forward to seeing everyone at conferences this time around. Thanks for taking the time to meet and communicate with me. It is greatly appreciated. As always if you ever have any concerns, questions or just want to touch base you can set up a time to meet with me always.
Small Group- Poetry: We have been reading and learning all about poetry. Students have created their very own poetry toolboxes and we have even taken some time to write our own poems. We have focused on the basics like what a poem looks like, how rhyming works, what a stanza is and much more. Students have also written a Haiku poem. It is a 3 lined poem that is written based on syllables. The first line has 5 syllables, the second line has 7 and the third has 5. We wrote about WINTER and what we love the most about it. Please take some time to see our poems that are up in the hall!
AR- Students should be around 55% of their AR goals. Please take a look at the weekly report coming home on Friday.
Spelling- This week our focus is on words with silent letters. Examples that are most common are: k, gh, b, e t, l and w (thumb, comb, through, knot, write).
Math- We are starting to wrap up our unit on fractions. Students will be getting their quizzes back today and have the task of figuring out why they got something wrong on it. We will be sending home an answer key to go along with it so you can help your student out. They have all worked very hard on fractions. We can compare fractions, draw fractions on a number line, find equivalent fractions and tell what each part of a fraction stands for. Next up will be measurement. :)
Writing- We are working on 2 paragraphs for our memory books right now as well as writing poems. We are writing about the first big snow fall and our Valentine's Day party. We did just get our second letters back from our California pen pals this week too. We are excited to write to them again!
Science- We have started the unit on Earth's Surface. Students are learning about the amount of land and water that is found on the Earth. We are also finding out how much of the water is actually fresh and usable. They will be learning about the layers of earth next and discussing what Earth's surface is like.
Technology- We are still using iPads in the classroom. Students are doing a great job. We have been having some network issues with sharing some projects online which is why I haven't been able to share more with you. Hopefully we will get the kinks out shortly.
I did want to tell you about a great website and app for the iPad. It's called Spelling City. You can access it online at home and also from a device that can have the app downloaded on. I have set up our Sitton core spelling words into the site. Each list can only contain 50 words so we now have 2 lists going. You can access the words and games without a username and password very easily. Go to Spellingcity.com. From there click on a blue tab that says 'Find a List'. There will also be a similar tab on a mobile device. Type in my whole name: Ana Bentin, and search. You should be able
Happy Freezing Friday!
Here is what we have been up to this week....
As you saw from our guest bloggers this week we have finished up our point of view stories. I have a few more to share with you today, and then the rest will be early next week. Students did such a great job with this project. We are now moving on to using idioms and figurative language. For the beginning of this topic we will use Amelia Bedelia books, as she is famous for actually hitting the road with a stick instead of getting ready to leave when you tell her it's time to 'Hit the Road!"
Spelling- This week we have focused on frequent spelling patterns for the \j\ sound. They are j, ge, ji and gy.
AR Reading- The first set of AR reports are coming home today. Students should be at 23% of their goal today. Sadly there are still many students who haven't taken one quiz this quarter yet or are behind on their average percent correct goal for not doing well on quizzes. Please take some time to review the sheet with your child this weekend to make some goals for the remainder of the quarter. :)
Math- We have continued to work on fractions this week. We have done a lot with discussing what a fraction really is. We have talked about it as being a piece of a larger unit. Students know what the top number in a fraction is called and also what the bottom number is called. They also know how to describe what each number represents. We are moving on to finding equivalent fractions with unlikely pairs and having some fun with partners and games.
Flashcards- Today marks the 15th day that students have had to test on flashcards. There are 15 sets. In order to stay on track students should be on level 7-8 right now. I have stapled a progress sheet in everyone's agenda so you know where your student is. Remember, we are working on automaticity which is that students know the facts without having to use their fingers or skip counting songs.
Science/Social Studies- We are working on a mixture of the two right now. We have continued to discuss the regions of the United States to prepare for our Pioneer Journey in a few months. We have also begun to discuss various landforms and how the earth's surface has made this journey both easy and hard.
Technology- We are still focusing on internet safety and how to use the internet as a learning tool.
