I wanted to say a huge thank you to each and every one of you. We had 100% participation in our Fall parent/teacher conferences! I appreciate the time that we get to sit down and discuss progress for your student. Don't forget I'm always here if you ever have any questions or concerns.
WINTER WEAR – Please remember that students need all five items (coat, snow pants, boots, hat, and mittens/gloves) to play in the snow. If you do not have any of these items and need help locating some please let me know. We always have some extras at school. Even though the snow has not fallen yet, it does get very windy and cold behind the school on our playground!
Reading- This week in reading we have been working on context clues. Students are learning new vocabulary words and figuring out what they mean by using the sentence that surrounds the word. It's been fun trying to figure out what each word means.
Writing- We have been writing away this week, and finishing up some projects. First of all we created an I'm Thankful paragraph to go along with Thanksgiving. Students will be typing them in Microsoft Word tomorrow. We will send them home and also include them in our memory books for the end of the year. I will share a few next week on the site and have some students guest blog about it. We are also working on descriptive paragraphs. Students created a picture in the computer lab of someone that is special to them. They are working on a three story paragraph describing that person inside and out. They are almost in the final stages now, and will be displayed in the hallways for everyone to see. As soon as we are finished I will also be sharing some of them on the website for you to take a look at.
Spelling- This week we took some time to go back and review several spelling concepts that were already worked on for the quarter. We also reviewed the different ways to make each long and short vowel sound. Next week we will begin on our next unit.
AR- we are at 30% of the quarter being done. Please reference the AR report that is coming home this week with your student. We are back to our same schedule.
Math- This week we have started on our concept of multiplication. We have taken a lot of time to come up with what multiplication is, and how we will use it. Students also realized that multiplication and addition are very similar. This is what we came up with.
1. What is it? A more efficient way to use repeat addition to find a total or whole.
2. Vocabulary: 2 (factor) X 6 (factor) = 12 (product)
3. Rules: The produce is always greater than the factors (also true in addition). You can use the commutative property which states that the factors can be in any order when you multiply and still get the same answer (2X6=12 or 6X2=12, which is also true in addition with the addends). The associative property states that you can arrange more than 2 factors in any order when multiplying and still get the same answer (7X3)X2= 42 or 7X(3X2)= 42, which is the same when adding more than 2 addends in addition). Any number times 0 is 0. Any number times 1 is that any number. Any even number times an even number has an even product.
We will continue with this practice on what multiplication is in reference to addition and subtraction. Our next step is to learn strategies and skills to help us remember multiplication facts.
Social Studies- We will start the quarter off in social studies. Our unit is on mapping. We have discussed different ways that maps can be used, different types of maps and the importance of maps.
