Here's what we've been up to...
Math- We've been working on a measurement unit. We started with length and learned to measure to the nearest quarter. We also practiced measuring to the nearest half inch. Students have done a great job and we will be reviewing this skill next week. We also talked about measuring liquid volume using both the standard and metric system. We know that in order from smallest to largest the units of measurement are cups, pints, quarts and gallons. We also talked about liters and milliliters. When we were done with liquid volume we moved to weight and mass. For the customary system we talked about ounces, pounds and tons. For the metric system we talked about grams and kilograms. These units can be practiced at home by measuring the weight of objects or people living in your house on a scale. You can practice by doing some cooking together as well. Have your student help measure out a cup of sugar for a recipe!
This week we also moved on to telling time. This was a bit more tricky for students to do since we don't have a lot of analog clocks to view time on these days. Please take some time to practice the following: Telling time to the nearest 15 minutes (quarter hour), 5 minutes and one minute. We also talked about different ways that we can tell time. For example, 3:15 can also be read as quarter after 3. This vocabulary is something that we will be using a lot. We can also use half past for any time with 30 minutes. 5:30 can also be read as half past 5. Lastly, for 45 minutes, we talked about reading that as quarter to the next hour. 7:45 can also be read as quarter to 8. If you're looking for ways to help your student out, getting an analog clock for your house would be a great idea. Practice telling the time before you leave the house or when you come home. Then discuss how long you were away doing something, or how long a program on TV was. Getting a watch for your student that has an analog clock on it would be a great stocking stuffer. Having that clock with them always can help when you're out and about and have a free second to practice time. Unfortunately we don't have a lot of extra time to work on this skill. We will continue to focus on it for a small amount of time and then review it. Having the use telling time in real life situations would be the best way for them to understand the concept of telling time and how long something lasts.
Reading- We're working on fables, myths, folktales and fairytales from now until the winter break. Students will be exposed to many different kinds of stories from each genre. If you have any books at home that fall into any one of those categories we would love to read it in class!
AR- Please take a look at AR reports going home today. We are at the half-way point for the quarter right now! It's so hard to believe how fast time is going.
Book Order- I will be placing a book order on Monday, December 8th. If you want to order something please send back the book order form or do so online. You can access our class scholastic page by going to https://clubs2.scholastic.com/
Click where it says: Parent's connect to your teacher and then enter our class code. Our code is G233G. If you would like to order anything as a holiday surprise that is not a problem at all. Please contact me via phone, note or email to let me know. So when the order arrives I can hold on to the items and make arrangements with you to pick up the items. Books make great Christmas gifts, especially since we have 2 weeks of break this year.
Spelling- We're working on unit 7 in spelling right now.The spelling pattern that we're focusing on is for oi and oy. We will also be working with adding suffixes to words. December spelling contracts were started in class this week. Students will now have the opportunity to work on them both at school and at home. There won't be enough time to do the whole thing at school, but hopefully students will have the opportunity to get them started here and then can bring them home with the proper materials to finish up.
Writing- We're still working on personal narratives right now in writing. We've spent a lot of time reading great examples of personal narratives and now are finally starting our own. Student started by making drawings/sketches of their life event before we even started to write. We will then take those sketches and write the details down to share with others.
Technology- We are learning how to do a digital storytelling project in technology right now. The goal is for students to retell a fable, folktale, myth or fairy tale that we end up working with by making a digital summary of the story. We won't get started on these until after break. For now, we're just practicing on how to put together a story summary in a digital way.
