Over the weekend students had the task of finishing their packing lists to be ready to travel tomorrow. I was quite impressed with the number of students who got their list 100% correct and were ready to go this morning! Wagon trains will not be able to leave tomorrow if one person in their group doesn't complete this packing list. Please ask your pioneer tonight if they are set and ready to go. If they aren't please take some time to go over and finalize their list with them. We spent a lot of time discussing the list at school and also working on them, so there shouldn't be much that is left to do.
With us starting the journey this would be a great time to start discussion with your pioneer about what we have already talked about in class. Ask them about their identity. Ask them about their occupation, how many animals they are bringing wit them or how many members are in their family. Ask them about the other members of their wagon train and how it has been working with them so far. Talk to them about their feelings as we prepare to start this journey. Most people at this point are excited and anxious because of the thought of making it to new land and having an open door to new possibilities. They are anxious because they don't know what lies ahead. They were well rested, not hungry and not sick or looking for water; so their energy levels are high. Students will need to draw into these feelings for multiple diary entries along the way to explain how they are feeling. This will also help them to compare how they feel when we get to a middle point and finally to the end of our journey. We will complete a persuasive paper at the end of this unit where students can decide if they would tell the rest of their family to take the same trail to meet them in the new land or not. Based on their experience along the way, they can choose whatever they want to tell their family but need to have examples of pros and cons to support their choice!!! Thank you so much for your help and support as we start our simulation. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!
Thank you to those who dressed up today to earn extra points. Tomorrow is the big dress-up day this week for the whole third grade. Students are encouraged to dress as a pioneer tomorrow. I will also be dressed up. Any other day students wish to dress up will be worth extra trail points!!!
