Happy Friday! A big thank you to everyone who was so flexible with conferences! The weather certainly would not cooperate with us, but we managed to still make our 100% goal!! Thank you so much! It's so great to have such wonderful families to talk about progress with.
Here's what we have been up to this week...
Language Arts-
We have been very focused on Canada. We're at the point now where we are making our displays for next week's multi-cultural day. Students are focused on 4 major learning areas for our displays. I will include pictures next week when we have them all complete. They have sure worked hard and put in a lot of effort for their projects.
Tourism- Students have learned of the many great cities and landmarks that visitors like to visit in Canada. Niagara Falls and Ontario are just a few examples.
Economy- Students have learned that oil, fishing and the logging industry are just a few of the ways that Canadians make a living.
Climate- Students have found that the climate in Canada is very similar to the climate in the United States. They have 4 distinct seasons just like us.
Resources- Canada's resources are forests, minerals, metals and energy. They are fundamental to the daily lives of Canadians.
Spelling- We have been focused this week on compound words (two words put together to make a third word) like light+house = lighthouse. Students had a hard time with this so we will be for sure reviewing it again next week. We also did a lot of work with adding a suffix to base words. We worked with various words like large (larger, largest), cry (cries, crying, cried). We practiced the different ways in which you change spelling when adding a suffix and also changing y to i in some cases.
AR- Next Friday is the last day of the quarter. Can you believe it?? I don't know about you but I am shocked that we are about to head into the last quarter of the school year. Please take a look at the current AR goal reports that are being sent home. Students who are behind have one more week to catch up! I know they can all do it.
Math- This week in math we have been measuring everything! We've talked about the difference between the metric system and the standard/customary systems of measurement. We have practiced comparing the different ways to measure between the two. We've talked about length, weight and volume for each. We have also learned how to measure the perimeter of an object. Students are working in small groups to measure various objects.
Technology- This week we have practiced playing the Oregon Trail game on the computers to get us geared up and ready to set off on the trail after Spring Break. If anyone has any artifacts or things at home that could be shown for this time period please let me know. We will take all of the stuff we can get. :)
