Pioneers: We started our pioneer simulation this week. We are building background, getting into character, learning about the map, packing our wagon and getting ready to leave Ft. Independence. The way the schedule looks we will be leaving on Tuesday of next week. Students may start dressing up any time now! I will be dressing up on Tuesday April 9th to symbolize the wagons leaving. Each day students dress up in character they will early extra wagon points for their team. Please don't stress over dressing up. A simple outfit can sometimes be the best. Wearing an apron or skirt/dress for the girls, or a farm hat and boots for the boys can be a simple way to dress up. I'm looking forward to seeing all of our pioneers ready to travel. We've already had some wonderful discussion on how the trail will look and what students plan on dressing up as.
Challenge Projects: This morning we had a third grade meeting to discuss the expectations of the challenge projects. Students are all bringing home a packet tonight to go over this weekend. They will have an assignment due Monday. I am asking that you decide as a family what 2 (students need to do at least 2 projects) projects each pioneer will do. I just ask that the planning pages be filled out only on the top indicating what topic, idea or question will be answered. This way we can start planning on what things need to be done at home and what things need to be done at school. I can help out with materials or project advice whenever. Please encourage students to make a list of what they will need, and then come talk to me and ask me what I can do to help. I'm hoping that by planning this way we will be ahead of the game.
Challenge Project Due Dates: 1. Monday, April 22nd (I will not be in school on the 19th.
This is a date change for our class only!)
2. Friday, May 3rd
3. Friday, May 10th.
All students must have one project to share on the first share day. Then they may decide on the other two days to present their second project or to do extra projects. If there are any questions or concerns about this please let me know. I am sending home a packet this weekend. Hopefully that clears up any confusion.
Spelling: This week we focused on adding a suffix to a word. We focused on adding an -er or -est. For most word we can just add the suffix (ex- high- higher, highest). For words ending in one vowel and one consonant, double the fianl consonant before adding a suffix that begins with a vowel (ex- big- bigger, biggest). For words ending in a silent 3, drop that e before adding a suffix that begins with a vowel (ex- late- later, latest). Lastly words ending in a consonant -y, change the y to i before adding er, est, es, ed, ly (ex- dry- drier, driest.) We will continue this next week working with -ed and -ing.
AR: We are 10% done with this quarter today. Students should have at least taken one chapter book quiz by now as well. Their assignment over Spring Break was to work on a book to be able to take a quiz Monday (4/1). Please encourage students to read the same chapter book at home that they do at school. This will help make sure they are finishing their books, and not working on many at once.
Math- This week we have taken math time to work on our packing lists. This has required students to multiply, add and subtract. We have 1000 Bulk Weight Units to pack into our wagons. This weekend students will need to finalize their lists, and make sure that they are accurately calculated so we can get ready to leave on the trail. We did most of it in class. Where you see the highlighted marks, that means up to that point I have double checked the math, so there is no need for you to recheck that. :) Hopefully that makes the finishing touches go smoothly this weekend!
